My Bioshock experience in '10

This was a piece I wrote 2 years ago to see if I had the love in me when it came to reviewing a game (wrote my first review somewhere on the nets back in '02 I believe.)

I misjudged this game just the way I misjudged those Big Daddys (my Bioshock review)


Taking place in the early 1960’s you’re a “lucky” guy who ends up entering the underwater city of Rapture! “Kindly” following instructive orders in order to return to your home and family, after an accident that has lured you into the great city of Rapture.

The pacing of the game is good because you'll be able to do things whenever you want without HAVING to do something in a matter of time although at some points I do wish there was a time limit into doing something in a rush to make it more intense.
Graphics are somewhat solid but definitely believable when it comes to elements. There are problems with the frame rate but can be adjusted if desired from the options menu to the game's maximum frame rate which basically degrades the visual quality. Depending on your eyes, you may have the decision to choose what fits you the most. What happens when you unlock the maximum frame rate? At times when you start up a new level or another area, it basically loads up probably 2 seconds to gather all the original detail. Besides the frame rate issue on ps3, the rest of the visuals are just virtually astonishing! When you step out of a sector and onto the next through the underground tunnel hallways, you'll see parts of the beautiful city of rapture.

If you have a surround sound system or headset you'll be thrilled by what's going around you and will feel like you're actually underwater (duh!). What amazes me the most is the voice acting, even with the Big Daddys as you can read the emotions they show, They actually Sound like a weeping whale when they are looking for little sisters to protect. The splicers in the game actually have personality in their voice acting as well, which is always a great feeling to keep you involved with the game. As for the Music in the game, Machines (where you make purchases) have their own music, Some stores in the game have their own music, and some of the splicers like to play their old phonographs so you’ll understand that at least they still have some sanity in them. The music and sound just goes really well with the feel and look of the time that this game takes place but you won’t even realize the music unless you hear those screeching violins play giving you that creepy “what’s going on?!” feeling, which is a plus for me. The sound of the game is almost there to the top and I’m pretty sure no one will complain. The only issue I noticed that's a bit off was the sound effects from the Weapons, wish they were stronger but everything else including the plasmids were just simply awesome.

The character you control has his back story and seems like it could’ve been way better but you will want to understand other characters more anyway. Understanding the Splicers and Big Daddys are one of the main strategic forces you’ll want to focus in the game as things can get tough on your journey. The game's life is one of the best features to me in this game, especially when you challenge yourself and play PS3's exclusive feature of Survivor mode where "every bullet counts" and not use any of the vita-chambers they have installed as checkpoints to basically reviving you when you die at a certain point of the level.

I also love the fact that you can come up with different strategies in able to defeat all enemies in game including those pesky hard to kill Big Daddys on survivor mode. You’ll also need strategies so you’ll be able to go through certain rooms that are locked or closed in anyway. As for the Weapons and Plasmids they have available in this game. There’s a respectable amount of weapons to construct/upgrade and SEVERAL different elemental Plasmids to understand for different enemies in able to escape this decaying city of rapture, and that’s what makes a game diverse! The aiming cursor and gun sights were different from my original fps experience but I've managed to get used to it although I believe it could've been done a little better, maybe with a lock-on feature for the plasmids (Just a suggestion)? So in order for you to get more Plasmids (or Gene Tonics) you’ll need ADAM which are within the Little Sisters of the game. Evil looking little girls they are, alongside a VERY protective BIG daddy for which you’ll have to figure out how to take him down so that you may make the decision of harvesting the little sister or rescuing her by killing the virus inside her. Of Course you’ll have consequences of your actions on the little sisters and this is another thing I love about this game.
As for “Gene Tonics”, these are your perks in the game that you can buy from the Gatherer Gardens machine with the ADAM you got from the little sisters. You’ll also be able to search around the city and find gene tonic bottles sitting on desks, or even be able to invent some when you use a U-invent machine (which you’ll figure out by playing this awesome game of course).

To end it, this game reminds me of Metal Gear meets Fallout 3 and if you haven't tried either of those games or this game, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR GAMER!?
